A note from our Founders

Every organisation has an origin story, and ours begins with a small, unexpected misunderstanding.

1970

During the warm haze of summer, 1970, in a pub-restaurant in Essex, two strangers found themselves standing shoulder-to-shoulder after a waitress called the name for the last available table for Sunday lunch.

Both men stepped forward to claim their rightful place, each convinced that the other was trying to ‘pull a fast one’.

It swiftly became apparent that they had a great deal in common. Both were entrepreneurs. Both married with three children. Both stood at 5’5”. And both, were named Terry Sullivan. What began as an awkward moment soon grew into a treasured friendship between two families.

One Terry Sullivan would later become the grandfather of Mark Dobson. The other was the father of Gary Sullivan. Neither could have imagined that their chance meeting would ultimately lead to the creation of Wilson James.

1990

Fast-forward to 1990, and Mark and Gary crossed paths at a family gathering. The conversation turned to ideas, ambition, and opportunity. A year later, Wilson James was born.

The early years saw our organisation supporting major construction projects including the Jubilee Line Extension and developments with leading property developer, Stanhope. These formative experiences shaped our understanding of high-stakes environments, establishing Wilson James as a trusted, multi-skilled partner in multifaceted settings.

As we grew, so did our ambition, powered by the realisation that by turning hard hats to blazers, we could deliver beyond the build phase to occupied buildings, creating sustained partnerships with a long-term vision.

We continued to innovate in logistics, pioneering new approaches including one of the UK’s first privately-operated consolidation centres, while investing heavily in technology and the development of our people. Our commitment to understanding clients’ needs, and building the capability to meet them, saw us broaden our service offering into new sectors and industries.

2026

Today, Wilson James operates across security, logistics, infrastructure, aviation support, and technology, delivering integrated services in some of the world’s most complex, highly regulated environments. Whether supporting major nuclear infrastructure projects, operating in busy international airports, or protecting iconic cultural institutions, our focus remains the same – a belief in people, a drive to innovate, and recognition that it is the strength of the whole that defines us.

Side by side, our sectors have grown; learning from one another, sharing expertise, and cross-pollinating ideas to continuously evolve solutions that make sense. This integration allows us to think ahead, solve problems before they arise, and deliver with greater certainty for our clients.

This belief led us to the next chapter in our journey. In 2026, we became an employee-owned business, with a majority share of Wilson James held in trust on behalf of our colleagues. This was a natural next step for a business that was built on the passion, commitment, and the expertise of its people.

Looking back, the two Terrys might be surprised that a brief disagreement over Sunday lunch sparked the creation of an organisation that now supports thousands of colleagues and clients around the world.

But we suspect they would also be incredibly proud.

Together, we are Wilson James.
